Having watched a horror film and fed the cat, I decided on a second drink. After the richness of the Merchant of Venice I was looking for something simple and clean. Creme de Violette sounds foul, and so does the price, so I’m making the Aviation version without it.
- 1 3/4 oz Gin
- 3/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
- 1/2 oz Lemon juice
- 1/4 oz chilled water
Shake all the ingredients with ice then fine strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a Maraschino cherry.
I would describe this as broadly pleasant, but with something a bit odd and off about it. It’s like going for a walk on a beautiful day with a stone in my shoe. I can do it, and even appreciate the scenery, but something is not quite right. I tasted the alcohol separately and the gin was lovely, but the Maraschino liqueur was not. I can’t describe it, there isn’t anything in my memory bank to compare it to. It doesn’t taste like cherries and it doesn’t taste like almonds, to me anyway. It just tastes odd. And I’m annoyed about it. It’s not readily available, it’s expensive, it’s one of the handsomest bottles in the cabinet and I really don’t think I like it.
