This is one of Jeff “Beachbum” Berry’s original recipes, and having been created in the 1990s is a rare example of a great modern tiki drink. It is also a terrific name for a rum drink.
Pimento/Allspice dram can be difficult to find, but making your own is easy and inexpensive. I used this recipe from Serious Eats.
- 1 oz Demerara Rum
- 1 oz Jamaican Rum
- 3/4 oz Lime juice
- 1/2 oz Grapefruit juice
- 1/2 oz Sugar syrup
- 1/4 oz Pimento dram
Shake all ingredients with ice, then strain into a tumbler over crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig.
This nails the classic citrus and sweet balance that all good tiki drinks pull off, but it’s the tang from the grapefruit and the warm spice of pimento dram that really elevates this. And the background funk from the Jamaican rum is one of the best tastes in life.
