The Pegu Club was a private club for British Army officers and staff in Yangon (formerly Rangoon) in Myanmar (formerly Burma.) Following three wars, Burma was part of the British Empire until gaining independence in 1947. The club was built in the 1880s, and while I can’t find when it closed, it has definitely gone to ruin today. Who knows, now Myanmar is opening up to tourism, perhaps some forward thinking developer will snap it up and make it into a luxury hotel of some kind.
- 2 oz Dry Gin
- 1 oz Triple sec
- 1/2 oz Lime juice
- 1/4 oz Sugar syrup
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- 1 dash orange bitters
Shake all the ingredients with ice, then strain into a cocktail glass.
I used a gin which had kefir and cardamom amongst its botanicals, which seemed appropriate for a drink from this part of the world. I found this very dry and crisp. Very boozy and gin forward, with the orange being quite subtle. It’s a serious, delicious drink.
